How to Fill the Mental Health Care Gap

Mental health exists on a spectrum, but many people fall into gaps between types of care. Cope Notes helps bridge these gaps by supporting people before, during, and after formal treatment. By focusing on prevention, intervention, engagement, follow-up, and long-term maintenance, it works alongside existing providers to ensure people receive consistent support throughout their mental health journey.

When it comes to mental health, we know health exists on a spectrum —from people with peak mental health to the “messy middle in-betweeners” to those in crisis. A spectrum of care also exists on your pathway to feeling healthy again—from licensed, mental health providers to medication and everything in between. Cope Notes wasn’t built to replace existing tools and providers. Instead, we team up with them to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

Care Gaps

Cope Notes serves everyone on the spectrum of mental health and is designed to fill the gaps of care, not replace care. We recognize that gaps exist, and we’re designed to be a bridge in the continuum of care.

Pre-Care

For people on wait lists, not struggling enough to take action, or unwilling to engage with care due to stigma, budget, privacy concerns, or scheduling issues.

Inter-Care

For people already participating in care who need supplemental support between sessions, or those who start strong and slowly become less engaged over time.

After-Care

For people who have graduated out of a formal care setting, but still need ongoing guidance, support, and encouragement as they adjust to their new normal.

Neglected Components of Care

Within each care gap, we’ve found neglected components—cracks where it’s easy for people to fall through and get stuck if they don't have appropriate assistance.

Prevention

Which makes more sense—proactively supporting people who are struggling with undiagnosed mental health issues or waiting until they seek help? Many people experiencing the beginning of their mental health journey might not be sure if they’re ready to seek help or they’re in the middle of receiving a diagnosis. At any step along a mental health journey, we’re here to help ease each day.

Intervention

Why limit care to clinical settings when many of our challenges arise at work, at school, and at home? Cope Notes seeks to meet people exactly where they are, in the places they are struggling most.

Engagement

How do you keep people engaged between counseling visits or bring back those who aren’t responding to appointment scheduling reminders?

Follow-Up

What happens after the counseling session, the call to the therapist, the crisis? Who checks in with them the next day, month, year?

Maintenance

How are people staying committed long-term and building upon the progress they’ve made?
